Unveiling the Power of Black Spheres: Precision Temperature Monitoring in Any Environment
The blackbody is an ideal body that absorbs all the electromagnetic energy it receives, regardless of the direction of incidence, without reflecting or diffusing it. Thus, the thermal radiation spontaneously emitted by ordinary objects or the environment (walls, floors, furniture, etc.) can be approximated by blackbody radiation.
This blackbody forms the basis for understanding the physical principles of non-contact temperature measurement technology and for calibrating absorption devices.
In theory, the blackbody is a closed, empty, radiation-impermeable isothermal solid enclosure. When brought to a certain temperature, the cavity of the blackbody offers excellent temperature uniformity. Only a small hole in the wall (small enough to have a negligible effect on equilibrium) allows for the measurement of the blackbody’s radiation.
In practice at Mesurex, a hollow copper sphere (Ø100mm, other diameter on request) is coated with a multi-layer matt black paint, high-temperature resistant (up to 600°C). It is pierced with a hole allowing the instrumentation of a measurement probe according to the customer’s requirements (thermocouple or PT100, sensor diameter and cable length on request). In addition, it can be equipped with a hanging system for easily installation in various setups. This very simple, but very effective instrument enables measurements from -40° to +80°C, with very stable results and an accuracy of 0.15°C (Pt100 mounting).
The measurement method applied with this dark radiation probe allows for obtaining an excellent measurement result representative of the average value of the measured space. The black ball is particularly suitable for monitoring the “ambient” temperature in large premises (office open spaces, industrial/logistics halls, veterinary laboratories, etc.), or for measuring radiation from heating, machinery or sunlight, as well as in the context of forensic or insurance expertise to establish a record of the average radiant temperature of a given environment.
