Choosing your temperature sensor wisely: thermocouple vs. Pt100

In the field of temperature measurement, the two most used technologies are: the thermocouple and the Pt100 (also called RTD – Resistance Temperature Detectors).

The thermocouple is a sensor that measures temperature using the difference in electrical voltage generated by two different metals connected together (aka Seebeck effect). When the temperature changes, the voltage also varies, making it possible to measure the temperature.

The advantages of the thermocouple are undeniable: low cost, small size, robustness, quick response time and wide measuring range (download our free selection guide on “How to choose the right thermocouple?“). They are commonly used in high-temperature applications and harsh environments. However, the accuracy is lower than the Pt100, and their response can be affected by the length of the probe and the quality of the connection.

– The Pt100 is a resistive temperature sensor that measures temperature using the electrical resistance of a high-purity platinum wire. The electrical resistance varies with temperature, which makes it possible to measure the temperature. The ohmic value of 100 Ω at 0°C.

The Pt100 is accurate and stable in the long term, offering excellent measurement linearity, making it suitable for high-precision temperature measurement applications. However, compared to thermocouples, Pt100 are more expensive, more sensitive to electromagnetic interference, have a more limited measurement range, and a slower response time.

In conclusion, the choice between a thermocouple and a Pt100 will depend on the specific needs of your application.
